What to Expect
The LLI Senior Experience

STEP ONE:
CHOOSE YOUR SESSION DATE
Most Seniors will choose a session date in June, July, or August before their Senior Year begins. This allows Seniors to share their favorite images on social media throughout the school year, as well as giving parents plenty of time to decide which prints they would like to make and what additional products they might want to have on hand for graduation celebrations. (For example: an album of all gallery images, or 5x7 prints for family members).
We have a handful of seniors each year that choose to do their session in September or October in hopes of having autumn colors in the background of their photos.
Friendly reminder to consider booking a June session, when the temperatures and humidity are lower! Early summer session dates also ensure that you have your full image gallery available to you before your senior year officially starts... perfect for those #SeniorPictureSunday posts on IG!

STEP TWO:
CHOOSE YOUR TIME OF DAY
One of the most important factors in the overall look and feel of your final images is the LIGHTING.
While we can work with any lighting situation, we tend to prefer either early morning lighting (as close to sunrise as possible) or later evening lighting (anytime after 4:00pm, ideally).
Many Seniors prefer evening sessions so they can "sleep in", but we highly recommend considering a sunrise session! The prettiest locations will be incredibly quiet and empty, whereas later in the evening we might need to work around other photographers to get the shots we need.
Either way, the closer the sun is to the horizon, the prettier the light will be!

STEP THREE:
CHOOSE YOUR LOCATION
We have several favorite local (St. Cloud area) locations at which we know we can knock the images out of the park EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.... and that is because they all have one thing in common: VARIETY!
Some of our favorites include:
- Quarry Park and Nature Preserve
- St. John's University Campus
- Downtown St. Cloud
We are more than happy to work at other locations, and we often find ourselves on family property, sports fields at schools, favorite parks, or even heading up to the North Shore near Duluth. If you have a place that is important to you, please let us know! Otherwise, we highly recommend one of the three locations we listed above.
Let's talk about...
WHAT TO WEAR
"What type of clothes should I wear for my session?"
While we want you to look like yourself and feel comfortable for your session, this is your opportunity to dress your best and have some fun with clothes! There is nothing wrong with sweatpants and sweatshirts most days, but we do have a few helpful hints to offer for your session outfits:
-- Consider different "lengths and layers". For example: Don't do ALL crewneck t-shirts and jeans if you have selected a session type with outfit changes. Consider adding in a jacket or button-down shirt... or some shorts! Think about different lengths, layers, and how you can bring variety to your session looks... and what proportions are most flattering on your frame.
-- Can you both SIT and STAND in the outfit? If so, we call that a winner! If you choose outfits that you can only stand in, you will limit your posing potential. It's okay to have one of your looks be a "standing only" style, but try to avoid that for most.
-- Whatever you do, ANTICIPATE THE WEATHER. If you're someone who sweats easily and your session is booked for an evening in July, you're going to want breathable fabrics that don't show sweat marks. If you are someone who is always cold, but you're looking forward to wearing a cute sundress on the beach at sunrise, please make sure you bring a cardigan or jacket to layer on top (at least until we start shooting). It's important that you are comfortable so you can smile naturally and just focus on having fun rather than worrying about your wardrobe!
-- Oh, and one last silly one (but it's in here for a reason!) ... TRY ON YOUR OUTFITS BEFORE YOUR SESSION DATE! :-)
"What colors look best?"
We LOVE a classic black or white top, and neutrals never go out of style... but, now that we've said that...
Think about colors that you have been complimented on in the past. Did someone tell you your eyes really POP when you wear teal? Or maybe your skin always looks tan when you're rocking hot pink? Don't be afraid to bring in some vibrant color -- we love to see it! If you have ever considered "having your colors done" by a coloring expert, this would be the perfect time to look into it! (or find an app on your phone that can lead you in the right direction).
You can never go wrong with the following staples:
- Denim
- White, Black, Gray or Cream
- Soft Blues/Greens/Earth Tones
We would also invite you to consider patterns and textures. We LOVE a classic linen look (as long as it's ironed!) and chunky textured sweaters are always winners on cooler days. Don't be afraid to bring in texture with your fabrics! That said, this little hint is more of a what NOT to wear... If the super trendy pattern this summer is a checkerboard print? Maybe make sure you're only incorporating it into ONE look and not all of them. Otherwise, in 5 years, you'll be looking back on your images with the same eye roll that millennials do whenever they see their old chevron patterned skirts.
We encourage you to have some fun with colors and patterns, but just make sure you work in a classic look or two, as well!
"What about accessories?"
Accessories are such an awesome opportunity to bring some extra personality into your looks! Are you a hat person? Do you have a favorite vintage jacket that you'll be wearing everywhere this fall? Do you like to wear 6+ rings on your fingers every day? We love to see Seniors bringing in lots of options for accessories! We can always add and subtract them from the outfits as we're moving along through the session.
HELPFUL HINT: Consider grabbing a (new!) fishing tackle box to keep all jewelry in for your session. It is an easy way to keep everything organized and accessible at your fingertips!
Also considered an "accessory" would be anything that you might want to incorporate into your sports photos! Are you a football player who wants to have photos done on the field? Touch base with your coach in advance to make sure you'll have access to a clean jersey, helmet, shoulder pads (if you want them), a ball... anything else that you might need to complete your look.
DON'T FORGET THE SHOES!
Most of our Seniors will bring a few pairs of shoes to their sessions. Typically a cute pair of (clean!) sneakers, maybe a dressier shoe, and a pair of sandals. Even if you don't want to wear an open-toed sandal for photos, we would recommend bringing some along (as well as a beach towel!) if you are planning to take any photos by water. We'll likely have you kick off your shoes if you're near the water and we definitely want you to have an easy way to transition back out of the water afterwards.
Considering having your hair and makeup done for your session?
We have a small list of local professionals that we would be happy to send your way! Just let us know if you want the list!
Let's Talk About... TIMELINES
Two Weeks Before Your Session...
- Time to have a chat with your photographer! This is a great point to finalize your chosen location(s) and where we will meet up. A few locations have parking fees or limited parking spaces, so this is a good opportunity to get all of those details sorted.
- Please make sure your session fee is paid in full by one week prior to your session date. The day of your session should be FUN and focused on your overall experience, not worrying about the business side of things! You'll receive an email with a link to make your final payment. If you'd prefer to pay with cash, check, or Venmo, please just let us know!
- Make sure you have your outfits and accessories selected, and you have tried them on! Bonus points if you can easily sit and move around in them. If you need any tailoring completed or adjustments made, now is the time. And don't forget about the shoes! :-)
- Make any arrangements with coaches/schools for field or gym access you might need.
- Avoid major sunburns and visible tan lines for the next two weeks! We do retouching on all of our Senior Portraits, but peeling skin and major tan lines are very difficult and time consuming to remove, and will potentially result in extra fees if they need to be retouched out of the final photos in your gallery. SUNSCREEN IS YOUR BEST FRIEND! :-)
The Day Before Your Session...
- Organize and pack all of your shoes, accessories, and clothes. It's a great idea to have clothing washed, dried, steamed (if needed), and hung on hangers. Shoes can go in their own bag, and then accessories and anything extra you might need should go into some kind of tote bag that can be carried along for the session. We highly recommend bringing a brush, hair spray, lip balm, and any other touch-up items you might want.
- Drink plenty of water, set whatever alarm you need for the morning (leaving yourself more time than you think you need) and GET LOTS OF SLEEP! It's called "Beauty Sleep" for a reason.
- Optional: Make a playlist of your favorite songs! If you want me to bring a little bluetooth speaker along for the session, I'm happy to do so, and will let you connect to it so your favorite music can play in the background while we're taking photos!
THE DAY OF YOUR SESSION
This is the fun part! The day you've been waiting for!
Your outfits are planned, the location is picked, the car is packed up, you've gotten plenty of sleep (right?!)... and it's TIME FOR YOUR SESSION!!!
Here's how things typically go:
Arrive at the pre-planned meeting spot approximately 5 minutes before your session is scheduled to start. We'll meet up, talk through your outfits, and briefly go over the session plan one final time, just so we're all on the same page. We will walk through any updates/changes that may need to happen based on what the location logistics are that day.
Your session will begin! And it will be FUN, FAST, and (honestly) over before you know it! We'll keep things moving, crack some terrible jokes, and all-around have a great time creating images that showcase you in your best light.
After the session, plan to get ice cream with your loved ones that came with you for the session. Just trust us... It's the best way to wrap up :-)
On our end, we will aim to get you a "sneak peek" of your images within 48 hours!
"But wait... what if it is raining on the day of my session?"
No worries here. We'll be in touch (via text, most likely the night before) if it looks like bad weather is in the forecast for your session date. We'll talk through ideas and options at that point. You won't have to take your photos in the rain! Well... unless you want to. We've done that before! It's all about YOU, after all!
What to Expect After Your Session...
Within 48 hours of your session, we will have a "sneak peek" sent your way! Sometimes it's via social media, and sometimes we send a text with a few photos. It just depends on what our schedule allows for that week, but we will make sure you get to see something so you can relax and know that everything went well!
We typically have full Senior galleries delivered 3-4 weeks after the session takes place. The gallery images will be edited and lightly retouched, with all of the digital files at a quality level that will be appropriate for saving, printing, and sharing with your friends & family.
Once you have received your gallery, we recommend that you DOWNLOAD ALL OF YOUR IMAGES. We will keep them online for you for the entirety of your senior year, but please download them and back them up for yourself (in more than one spot!). External hard drive, thumb drive, Google Photos, DropBox... whichever options you prefer... just don't forget this important step.
PRINTING YOUR PHOTOS
Your gallery will have a shopping cart feature, from which you can order professional quality prints and products at an affordable price point. We highly recommend doing your printing this way! We love the printing lab that we go through and trust them completely. That said, you are welcome to make prints anywhere. A very common printed product that our Seniors will create is a Shutterfly album with all of their images.
YEARBOOK PHOTOS
Most schools require families to upload a Senior photo for the yearbook via a link that is emailed to the family. You are welcome to download any of the images from your gallery to send to the yearbook. If you need help with this process, or you would prefer that we send an email with your chosen yearbook image to your school, please let us know! We are more than happy to help.
