A Romantic Stillwater, MN Proposal on the Lift Bridge | Max & Seema's Surprise Engagement
Five years after attending prom together on a riverboat floating down the St. Croix River, Max brought Seema back to the place where their story began... and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him.
For Max and Seema, Stillwater, MN will always hold a piece of their story.
Five years ago, as high school students attending prom, they stepped aboard a riverboat cruise and spent an evening floating along the St. Croix River. At the time, they couldn't have known where life would take them, but that night became one of the first core memories in a relationship that would grow into something truly beautiful.
Over the next five years, they navigated college, celebrated milestones, supported one another through life's changes, and built a relationship rooted in friendship, trust, and love. This spring, both Max and Seema graduated from college -- a major accomplishment and the beginning of an exciting new chapter for them both.
And as Max began planning how he would ask Seema to marry him, he knew exactly where he wanted that moment to happen...
He wanted to bring her back to where it all began.
A Full-Circle Moment on the Stillwater Lift Bridge
The historic Stillwater Lift Bridge stands as one of Minnesota's most iconic landmarks, overlooking the beautiful St. Croix River and the charming downtown streets below.
As Max and Seema walked together across the bridge, the evening felt almost poetic. Five years after sharing prom together on the river below (and having returned to visit many times since) they found themselves back in the same place where many of their earliest memories had been made. The St. Croix buzzed with the kind of magic only a summer evening can bring -- live music floated across the water from a band on the Stillwater shoreline while families wandered the riverwalk, couples lingered hand-in-hand, and the golden light danced across the river below. Max and Seema made their way to the other side of the bridge, as they had done numerous times before...
Then came the moment.
Max dropped to one knee and asked Seema to spend forever with him.
The surprise, the happy tears, the literal JUMPING for joy from Seema, the laughter -- it was everything a proposal should be. And of course, Seema said yes!
Watching the two of them together, it was impossible not to smile. They have a quiet, genuine way of caring for one another that makes everyone around them feel comfortable and welcomed. They are thoughtful, kind-hearted, and incredibly warm people, and it was such a privilege to witness this moment in their story.
One Simple Proposal Photography Tip:
One of the best pieces of advice I can give anyone planning a surprise proposal is to share your location with your photographer ahead of time.
Max did exactly that, and it made the entire experience seamless.
Rather than worrying about sending text messages or trying to discreetly update me on where they were, he simply shared his location before they arrived. This allowed me to stay hidden, follow their progress from a distance, and be fully prepared when the moment arrived.
The result? A genuine surprise, no distractions, and photographs that captured every emotion exactly as it unfolded.
If you're planning a surprise proposal and want natural, authentic images of the moment, this small detail can make a huge difference.
Celebrating Their "Yes" with Engagement Portraits
After the proposal, we spent some time wandering around Stillwater together, creating engagement portraits in the place that has meant so much throughout their relationship.
There was something especially meaningful about photographing them there, in the immediate excitement and joy of the moment.
The river that once served as the backdrop to their prom night was now witnessing the beginning of their exciting next chapter: engagement. What started as two teenagers attending a dance together had grown into two college graduates excitedly planning a future side by side.
Throughout the session, they couldn't stop smiling at each other, giggling, and reliving the day and all of the ways Max had succeeded in pulling off this incredible surprise!
The excitement was still fresh, the ring still felt new on Seema's hand, and every photograph captured the happiness of two people who simply love being together.
These are the moments I love most -- the ones that tell a story. Not just a proposal, but a journey. A place that means something. A memory connected to another memory. A reminder that sometimes life's most meaningful moments happen when we return to where it all started.
Congratulations, Max and Seema! Thank you for trusting me to document such a beautiful chapter of your story. Your kindness, your huge hearts, and the love you share made this an unforgettable evening, and I am so excited for everything that lies ahead for you both!
